The spot that was lights-out in July can go dead by September, and a spot nobody touched all summer can suddenly load up with fish in October. It feels random if you don't know what's driving it, but it isn't — for nearly every freshwater species, one variable explains most of it: water temperature.
Spring: the push toward shallow water
As water warms coming out of winter, fish move shallow to spawn. Exact timing and target depth vary by species — this isn't one single event happening the same way for bass, walleye, and trout — but the underlying driver is the same across most freshwater fish: rising temperature triggers the shallow-water push.
Summer: the thermocline splits the lake in two
Once surface water heats up enough, a lake naturally separates into layers — warm water on top, a band called the thermocline where temperature drops off sharply, and cooler, denser water below that. Once surface temps climb into the 80s, that top layer gets uncomfortably warm for a lot of species, and fish move down toward thermocline depth, shaded cover, or current instead. This is why summer fishing often means going deeper or finding shade rather than fishing the same shallow spots that produced in spring.
Fall: turnover breaks the layers apart
As surface water cools in fall, it becomes denser than the water below it and starts to sink, mixing the lake's layers back into one uniform body of water with even temperature and oxygen top to bottom. This is called fall turnover, and it does two things at once: it triggers aggressive, active feeding as baitfish lose the thermal barrier that was protecting them, but it also scatters fish that had been concentrated around the thermocline out across the whole water column. Fall fishing can be some of the best of the year and some of the most frustrating in the same week — more active fish, but harder to pin down in one spot.
Winter: everything slows down
Fish are cold-blooded, so their metabolism is directly tied to water temperature. As water cools through winter, feeding activity and overall movement drop off substantially, which is why winter presentations are almost always slower and more subtle than what works the rest of the year.
The pattern is universal, the execution isn't
Every freshwater species runs through some version of this cycle, but where a given species sits in the water column, how far it moves, and what triggers it to feed hardest all shift species by species. Understanding the general pattern tells you why fish are moving. Knowing the specifics for the species you're targeting is what actually puts them in the boat.
